Lambert Group partners with WFRC to provide hockey equipment and funds

Thanks to the generosity of Jon Lambert and the Lambert Group, we’re very excited to be able to offer kids hockey equipment and funds to play hockey for families in need this year. The Lambert Group Hockey Sponsorship Program is a newly created program where we have the opportunity to give back to the community and assist in supporting kids who can’t otherwise afford to play!

You can read Jon Lambert’s story about his personal experience here, where he talks about the challenges his family faced paying for hockey when he was growing up, and why it’s important to him to pass the assistance on so that more children can play hockey.

Those interested in receiving assistance to play hockey, please contact Wilmot Family Resource Centre either by phone (519.662.2731) or email: wfrc@bellnet.ca.

Abuse is more than just hitting

November is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which was created in response to the difficulty in discussing issues of family violence and intimate partner violence in our community. The goal of Domestic Violence Awareness Month is to raise awareness of the importance of this issue and to reduce the stigma faced by survivors of domestic violence.

However, it’s also important to talk about what sort of behavior constitutes abuse. Stereotypically, there is the tendency to think of domestic violence as being physical. However, abuse can take a variety of forms, and can look like things we don’t necessarily think about or expect. So what exactly is abuse?

Abuse is about intimidation and control. It comes in many forms, including:

Neglect

Physical Abuse:

  • Hitting, kicking, poking, pushing, biting, pulling hair, or any other unwanted touch
  • Threatening to harm you or your children; once there has been a threat, fear is always present

Sexual Abuse: Any unwanted touch or comment that is sexual in nature.

Verbal Abuse: Name calling, insults, ridicule, humiliation, put-downs

Emotional Abuse:

  • Is more subtle than verbal abuse, but more damaging
  • Implied messages that you are not good enough, important, competent, intelligent, or loveable
  • Suggestions that there is something wrong with you and that you have no value

Financial Abuse:

  • Control of another person’s money and economic resources
  • Refusal to allow any input and control about how and where money is spent
  • Refusal to give money needed for personal necessitites
  • Refusal to let the other person know about their finances
  • Demands that the other person hand over their paycheque without explaining where that money is going.

If you are experiencing any form of abuse and would like help, contact Teresa – fvpp4wfrc@bellnet.ca.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

November is Domestic Violence Awareness Month – a chance to highlight the ongoing issues of intimate partner and family violence in our community. The stigma against survivors of domestic violence keeps many victims from speaking out or seeking help, which is why it’s important to raise awareness of just how prevalent this issue is.

Here are some basic things to consider when looking at domestic violence in Ontario and in Waterloo Region:

And of course, all of this is only scratching the surface of the issue. If you would like to learn more about how domestic violence affects our communities, you can read more here.

If you are someone who is experiencing any form of abuse – emotional, physical, sexual, or financial – we can help. Contact our office and ask to speak with Teresa, or email fvpp4wfrc@bellnet.ca.

How to subscribe to our events using Google Calendar

As part of our ongoing website renovations, we’ve added a new Google Calendar to our website, so that interested community members can get accurate information about our scheduled programs and events when they need it. However, a handy feature of the Google Calendar is that you can subscribe to our calendar to get reminders of our events sent to your phone or email! It only takes a minute to set up, and requires that you have a Gmail account or that you are using an Android phone.

Getting Started

First, either log in to your Google account (on desktop) or unlock your Android phone. Then go to our calendar page. At the bottom of the calendar is a button that says +Google Calendar.

After you click the button, you’ll get a pop-up that looks like this, which will give you the ability to choose which of our events you want to subscribe to:

After you’ve subscribed to one or both of our calendars, our events will show up in your Google Calendar. However, if you’re looking at your calendar and want to hide our events from the display, you can click the downward arrow next to Agency Programs to bring up this menu, then select Hide this calendar from the list.

Happy scheduling!
